Smoking In Public Places

Posted on March 15, 2010.
Smoking In Public PlacesWhat do you think smoking in public places?

I'm just curious to see what different people think about smoking is allowed in public places such as schools, hopsitals, restaurants, etc. Do you think all states should implement a total ban on smoking in public places?

First, let me say that I smoke. I am very conservative who despises political correctness and I firmly believe in personal freedom and individual responsibility as it is limited to that only affects the individual in question, when my actions affect others, it is not only to me more. This life is not all about me and what I want it all the time, I live in this world with other people and their needs must also issue. I hear other smokers say: "What about my rights?". I have often noticed in this country, people seem to think that we have two types of rights, we have things we hope to be our rights because they are clearly defined in the Constitution as our rights then we have things that we expect to be our rights because "I say they are my rights." Smoking is not a right, it's a choice. It is a legal activity, but it is not recognized as a protected right or privilege that we have. This is a protected right, however, for citizens to be in a public place and expect to be a safe and healthy environment, which is why we have organizations such as OSHA to regulate these issues. Some argue that smoking bans violate the rights of business owners. Well, I'm for the rights of business owners manage their businesses as they see fit, but a substantial public health is not a matter of private business. Is that a restaurant owner has the right to allow customers to dogs that are not service animals in restaurants? State and local laws would say no, because he can do to a potentially dangerous or unhealthy. I agree with the negative hype about secondhand smoke is very over rated but this is not totally false. People may have existing health problems like asthma or heart disease may be aggravated by exposure to secondhand smoke. I agree with allowing smoking in places such as bars and casinos, where smoking is a planned activity and respond only to adult sites, but I see no real injustice to the prohibition smoking in places such as restaurants which cater to the patronage of the family where there are probably children and seniors present. I realize that sometimes it is embarrassing not to smoke in a public place, but I can get out of smoking a cigarette, a non-smoker is not able to return a switch to it to breathe clean air in the middle of my cigarette smoke. So who is really selfish here? Who is really embarrass? I'm sure the argument is "Well, non-smokers should not be there, he can just leave if he does not like:" Why? Why should he go? Why is this a world of smoking (when we are in the minority, btw) and non-smokers should just "deal with it" and make all the sacrifices? Why is my wish to smoke anywhere I want to be superior to non-smokers right to breathe clean air? I would have any right to smoke in my house, my car, or any private setting where it is permitted by the person in control, but when I go to a public place, I'm on the field that belongs to all world. Everyone is all that I am a guest. Just because I have the right to be there, does not mean I usually have the right to be there. I'm from Arkansas, where smoking is prohibited in public places, but is permitted in bars and certain types of clubs, and indeed had a very good result, restaurants and other places are cleaner and more pleasant to be. It takes each individual state to decide these laws, but I fully support banning smoking in most public p.
